••••Note:Mai si traduce in inglese con never oppure ever. Never concentra in sé il valore negativo della frase, e quindi esclude l'uso di altri negativi (diversamente dal mai italiano): non ho mai visto nessuno mangiare così! = I never saw anybody eating like that! Never precede il verbo quando questo è in forma semplice (tranne to be) e segue il primo ausiliare quando il verbo è composto: non mangia mai abbastanza = she never eats enough; non è mai stanca = she is never tired; non l'ho mai incontrato = I've never met him. Ever si usa in quattro casi: al posto di never, quando si deve o si vuole mantenere un'altra forma negativa nella frase (non farlo mai più! = don't you ever do that again!); quando mai ha valore positivo e significa qualche volta (sei mai stato a Londra? = have you ever been to London?); dopo un comparativo ( più magro che mai = thinner than ever); infine, nel linguaggio parlato, ever segue e rafforza never (non glielo dirò mai! = I'll never ever tell him!)* * *mai/mai/Mai si traduce in inglese con never oppure ever. = had I known he was in Rome... - Quando, dopo verbi come to ask, to know, to wonder ecc., se introduce un'interrogativa indiretta o una dubitativa, la traduzione è if oppure whether, quest'ultimo usato specialmente se lo stile è più formale o se viene esplicitata l'alternativa se... o: non so se lo sa = I don't know if he knows; mi chiedo se l'abbia fatto o meno = I wonder whether he did it or not. - Quando se non è reso con unless, questa congiunzione concentra in sé il contenuto negativo della frase, che pertanto non richiede negazione e ausiliare: se non me lo dici subito... = unless you tell me at once...1 (condizionale) if; se telefona, digli che non ci sono if he phones, tell him I'm not in; se vuoi vengo con te I'll come with you if you like; se fossi in te o al tuo posto if I were you; sarei contento se piovesse I would be happy if it rained2 (causativo) se lo sapevi perché non me l'hai detto? since you knew, why didn't you tell me? se proprio insisti, vengo if you insist, I'll come3 (concessivo) if; se anche, anche se even if, even though; è furbo, anche se non sembra he's sly although he doesn't look it4 (in frasi esclamative) if; se (solo o almeno) lo avessi saputo! if only I had known! had I known! se Dio vuole! Note:This much-used verb has no multipurpose equivalent in Italian and therefore it is very often translated by choosing a synonym: to get lunch = to prepare lunch = preparare il pranzo. - Get is used in many different contexts and has many different meanings, the most important of which are the following: obtain or receive ( I got it free = l'ho avuto gratis), move or travel ( I got there in time = ci sono arrivato in tempo), have or own ( she has got black hair and green eyes = ha i capelli neri e gli occhi verdi), become ( I'm getting old = sto invecchiando), and understand (got the meaning? = capito?). - Get is also used in many idiomatic expressions ( to get something off one's chest etc), whose translations will be found in the appropriate entry ( chest etc). - When get + object + infinitive is used in English to mean to persuade somebody to do something, fare is used in Italian followed by an infinitive: she got me to clear the table = mi ha fatto sparecchiare la tavola. When get + object + past participle is used to express the idea that a job is done not by you but by somebody else, fare followed by an infinitive is also used in Italian: to get a room painted = fare verniciare una stanza. - When get has the meaning of become and is followed by an adjective (to get rich / drunk etc), diventare is sometimes useful but check the appropriate entry ( rich, drunk etc) as a single verb often suffices ( arricchirsi, ubriacarsi etc). - For examples and further uses of get see the entry below* * *[ɡet]past tense - got; verb1) (to receive or obtain: I got a letter this morning.) ricevere2) (to bring or buy: Please get me some food.) prendere, comprare3) (to (manage to) move, go, take, put etc: He couldn't get across the river; I got the book down from the shelf.) attraversare; prendere4) (to cause to be in a certain condition etc: You'll get me into trouble.) mettere; procurare5) (to become: You're getting old.) diventare6) (to persuade: I'll try to get him to go.) convincere7) (to arrive: When did they get home?) arrivare8) (to succeed (in doing) or to happen (to do) something: I'll soon get to know the neighbours; I got the book read last night.) riuscire a9) (to catch (a disease etc): She got measles last week.) prendersi10) (to catch (someone): The police will soon get the thief.) acciuffare11) (to understand: I didn't get the point of his story.) capire•- getaway- get-together

- For examples and further uses of get see the entry below -
